If you’re at all with the programme when it comes to the environmental crisis, then you’ll know that waste is one of our worst enemies. The 4.5 million tonnes of food and drink waste that the UK produces annually is enough to comfortably fill 30 Royal Albert Halls*. The truth is, a lot can be done to reduce the food waste that our households produce if we’re just willing to put in a little bit more effort.

Naked Gecko was founded on the principle that these long sought after answers for how to lead a more sustainable life are just not that accessible. So, why should our blog be any different? Here we will grant you 5 kitchen hacks that you can implement today to help you reduce the food waste your household produces.

  1. Store vegetables such as broccoli, celery, carrots and asparagus in water.

Hopefully you aren’t too surprised to know that plants rely on water. Well, just like the flowers on your windowsill, root vegetables can be kept fresh and crisp for longer by storing them, root-first, in water. Use this hack to get a few days extra out of your vegetables.

  1. Use out of date yoghurt instead of milk to make cakes or scones

We recommend this yoghurt cake recipe from the BBC. Don’t forget to clean the empty yoghurt pots before you put them in the recycling!

  1. Keep the seeds of bell peppers and grow them at home

Usually, the seeds and core of your peppers go straight into your food waste bin. Next time, remove the top of a green, yellow or red pepper and gently scrape the seeds into a container. Follow the guidance here and watch them grow into new peppers.

  1. Turn fruit or vegetables that are going off into juice, smoothies or soup

They may not look as fresh as they did on the shelves, but that doesn’t mean that turning fruit, veg and even leftovers can’t still be used to give you a nutritious boost. Time to get out the food processor (and a few extras) and find an online recipe. We’d recommend this smoothie recipe by Good Housekeeping.

Once your creation is ready (and has cooled if it’s a soup), you can store it in one of our Glass Storage Jars!
